Algolia's search engine runs only as a hosted service under a subscription agreement, and its source is neither published nor offered for self-hosting. The code Algolia does publish as open source is client-side, such as the MIT-licensed InstantSearch UI library, and contains no search engine.
- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/algolia/instantsearch/master/LICENSE recorded 2026-09-28
The open code Algolia publishes is client-side: its InstantSearch UI library carries "The MIT License (MIT)" with "Copyright (c) 2015-present Algolia, Inc.", and ships no search engine.
- https://www.algolia.com/policies/terms/ recorded 2026-10-13
Algolia's terms of service are a subscription to a hosted service: the agreement is "made for the purpose of granting Subscriber a limited subscription to use Algolia" hosted search, the subscriber "shall not reverse engineer, decompile, translate, disassemble or otherwise attempt to extract any or all of the source code of the Services", and the open source Algolia offers is described as "certain language specific codes that enable easy communication with Algolia Software".

The AI Search page presents a hosted API: "Algolia AI Search is an API-first solution that combines keyword and semantic techniques to deliver fast, relevant results". Searched the body for self-host, on-prem, source-available and license: none; its open-source mentions are a navigation link and a contact entry for Algolia's open-source program.
Adoption
4 high confidenceAlgolia is measured by the end-user queries its hosted search serves for companies such as Stripe, Decathlon and Ubisoft, since each paying account puts the engine in front of a whole site's visitors. Its customer count counts businesses rather than the people searching through them, and on its own would place it lower.
- https://www.algolia.com/products/ai-search/ recorded 2026-09-28
The AI Search page carries "More than 18,000 customers in 150+ countries trust Algolia" and "Algolia processes more than 1 billion queries every 5 seconds, with an average response time under 20 milliseconds", beside a logo strip that includes Stripe, Decathlon and Ubisoft; further down it says Algolia is "processing over two trillion queries each year".
Capability
4 medium confidenceAlgolia AI Search is a complete, hosted, distributed search platform. What separates the most capable systems in this category is letting the operator host and evaluate their own ranking or embedding models inside the serving path, the way Vespa evaluates ONNX and tensor models; Algolia's NeuralSearch is built into the service rather than exposed as a facility of that kind.

Algolia's AI Search product page: NeuralSearch combining vector and keyword retrieval, AI ranking and personalization over the customer's own indexed content, delivered as a hosted API. No facility for deploying a customer's own ranking or embedding model into the serving path appears on it.
