arXiv API

arXiv
open source / Overall score: n/a

arXiv's public query API at export.arxiv.org/api/query, which searches the arXiv preprint server by title, author, abstract, comment, journal reference, category or report number, or looks papers up by identifier. Results come back as an Atom feed giving each paper's title, authors, abstract and categories, with links to its abstract page and PDF. It needs no key, and arXiv's terms ask for no more than one request every three seconds.

arXiv's documentation calls this its legacy API. The code for it is published in arXiv's arxiv-search repository as a Python reimplementation of an older Perl and Lucene service, and the feed the live endpoint returns carries the reimplementation's formatting rather than the format the user manual shows from the old service. Building an index with that code needs an arXiv metadata endpoint reachable only from Cornell University Library's network; the metadata itself is public through OAI-PMH and bulk downloads. The terms let callers store and share descriptive metadata, but not serve the papers themselves without the copyright holder's permission or a license that allows it.

no — a nonprofit's free public API with no paid tier in its terms

The service behind the API is published under MIT in arXiv's arxiv-search repository, which describes it as the replacement for the old export.arxiv.org service. The live endpoint returns feeds formatted the way that code formats them, not the way the old service did, which is the evidence it is the code in production; arXiv does not state it outright, hence medium confidence. arXiv is a nonprofit and its API terms name no paid tier.

The live feed: `<title>arXiv Query: search_query=all:retrieval&amp;id_list=&amp;start=0&amp;max_results=2</title>` and `<id>https://arxiv.org/api/UsmWS98RQDJiq1Y9LMuoqtpMfV4</id>`, the lowercase "arXiv Query" title and https id the published serializer emits.

  • https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/index.html recorded 2026-10-13

"arXiv offers public API access in order to maximize its openness and interoperability"; independent, noncommercial and open-access projects need no assistance from arXiv, and API users are asked to acknowledge arXiv. Page banner: "arXiv is now an independent nonprofit!"

Terms of Use for arXiv APIs: rate limits ("make no more than one request every three seconds" on the legacy APIs, with higher rates by contacting support), what users may and must not do; no fee or paid tier is described.

  • https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/user-manual.html recorded 2026-10-13

The user manual's example response from the older service reads `ArXiv Query: search_query=all:electron&id_list=&start=0&max_results=1` with an id under http://arxiv.org/api/, a different format from what the endpoint returns today.

  • https://raw.githubusercontent.com/arXiv/arxiv-search/HEAD/AGENTS.md recorded 2026-10-13

The repository's guide lists the Classic API app serving "`/api/query` — Atom XML (the `export.arxiv.org/api/query` replacement)" and says "The classic API is a Python reimplementation of a Perl/Lucene 2.3.2 service".

  • https://raw.githubusercontent.com/arXiv/arxiv-search/HEAD/LICENSE recorded 2026-10-13

The LICENSE body: MIT License, "Copyright (c) 2026 arXiv, Inc.", followed by "Contributions made on or before June 30, 2026 are: Copyright (c) 2017-2025 Cornell University Library" under the same MIT text.

  • https://raw.githubusercontent.com/arXiv/arxiv-search/HEAD/search/serialize/atom.py recorded 2026-10-13

The Atom serializer sets the feed title with `fg.title(f"arXiv Query: {query.to_query_string()}")` and builds the feed id from a SHA-1 of the query string under https://arxiv.org/api/.

Adoption

not assessed

arXiv publishes reports and institutional download statistics for papers, but no count of API requests or API users on the pages read. The API needs no key, account or client package, so there is no sign-up or download figure to count instead. No level is recorded.

  • https://info.arxiv.org/about/reports/index.html recorded 2026-10-13

arXiv's reports index: annual reports, budgets, roadmaps and "Annual Institutional Usage (Downloads) Statistics", with no API request or user count, which is why no level is recorded.

Capability

3 high confidence
3.0

The API returns a list of matching papers, each with its full abstract and a link to its PDF, but not the paper itself, so getting the text means a separate download and a PDF parser of the caller's own. Returning references without the content behind them puts it level with SearXNG. It composes no answer.
