GitHub's own confirmed figure for Copilot is a cumulative all-time user count rather than a measure of current active use, dating from when the free tier opened to all GitHub developers. Copilot's paid-subscriber count, the only actively-adjacent number GitHub discloses, is considerably smaller than that all-time total.

GitHub Copilot combines chat, inline completion, agent mode and multi-model selection across GPT, Claude and Gemini, with deep IDE and GitHub integration, enterprise governance controls, a CLI, Copilot Spaces for shared repository context, and custom or third-party agents over MCP. That breadth places it at the frontier for in-IDE assistants.
