Kaggle Datasets

Kaggle
closed / Overall score: n/a

Kaggle Datasets is the public dataset catalog on Kaggle, Google's data science platform. Users and organizations publish datasets with per-file descriptions and column schemas, add new versions, and choose a license. The catalog is searchable by file type, license, tag and size, and the Kaggle CLI and the kagglehub library download a dataset by owner and name or load a file straight into a dataframe.

Kaggle's model hub is the separate entry Kaggle Models.

Kaggle Datasets is part of Kaggle's hosted platform, and what Kaggle publishes openly are two clients for it, a Python library and a CLI. Neither contains the service, so nothing about the catalog can be run elsewhere.

Adoption

not assessed

Kaggle's dataset pages and listing API served a browser challenge or needed an account, and the CLI documentation describes paged results with no total. No usage figure could be read, and downloads of the kagglehub client would measure a client rather than the catalog.

Capability

4 medium confidence
4.0

Any user or organization can publish a dataset and new versions from the Kaggle CLI, and kagglehub fetches a given version by owner, name and version number. Kaggle profiles the columns of tabular files for display on the dataset page only, and dataframe loading happens in the client, so it sits with Zenodo rather than with OpenML, whose servers serve the parsed structure back.
