Meta AI is a closed proprietary consumer product, the closed counterpart to the open chat interfaces in this category. Meta's own newsroom describes an assistant it builds and runs itself, powered by Muse Spark 1.1, with no source, no repository and no self-hostable build. Muse Spark itself is offered to outside developers only as a private-preview API for select partners.

Meta executives have disclosed monthly active user counts for Meta AI well above the mass-market threshold, mostly on WhatsApp. Much of that reflects embedded exposure within WhatsApp and Instagram rather than deliberate use, and analysts argue engaged usage is lower than the headline suggests, so the count belongs to the embedded surface, not a standalone assistant.
