Meta AI the assistant is a closed proprietary consumer product - the closed counterpart to the open chat interfaces in this category. The openness of Llama the model is a separate, restricted-class score. Meta's own newsroom describes an assistant Meta builds and runs, powered by its own Muse Spark 1.1 and delivered through the Meta AI app and meta.ai, with no source, no repository and no self-hostable build.

A right of access to a service Meta runs, with no published implementation, is the ladder's closed rung.

Mark Zuckerberg stated at the May 2025 shareholder meeting that Meta AI had passed 1B monthly active users, and it is reported to have grown to roughly 1.2B by early 2026, with around 63% of interactions happening on WhatsApp - far above the >10M threshold. One caveat: a portion of those monthly actives reflect surfaced or embedded exposure inside WhatsApp and Instagram rather than deliberate assistant use, and at least one analyst (Kantrowitz) argues engaged usage is far lower than OpenAI's. The count therefore belongs to the embedded surface rather than to a standalone assistant.

A broad-reach consumer assistant that is nonetheless narrow on the dimensions this category measures: one provider, consumer-only, no enterprise or organisational-data depth, so not a category frontier-definer on capability. The assistant now runs on Muse Spark 1.1 from Meta Superintelligence Labs rather than Llama 4, and it connects to email and calendar apps, generates slides and executes multi-step plans, so it is no longer thin on tool breadth. What still does not appear is enterprise or organisational-data grounding, or any third-party model choice, and that is what holds the score down.
