π0 (openpi)

Physical Intelligence
open weights / Overall score: 3.6

π0 is Physical Intelligence's line of vision-language-action models, released with training and inference code in the openpi repository. It spans π0, a flow-matching VLA, π0-FAST, an autoregressive variant using the FAST action tokenizer, and π0.5, which generalizes better to new environments. Base checkpoints are pretrained on over ten thousand hours of robot data.

The weights and the full training code are public under Apache-2.0, but the more than ten thousand hours of robot data the base models learned from are not. LeRobot's Hub copies of the same checkpoints are marked with Google's Gemma terms, which Physical Intelligence's own repository does not mention.

Adoption

3 low confidence
3.0

GitHub stars on openpi. Physical Intelligence publishes its checkpoints from a cloud bucket that reports no download count, and the Hub copies belong to LeRobot.

Capability

4 medium confidence
4.0

π0 is pretrained across many robots and has released fine-tunes that fold towels and uncap pens on a bimanual ALOHA rig, and π0.5 is built to generalize to environments outside its training. Physical Intelligence itself warns that adapting it to a new platform may not work.
