Meta AI

Meta

Meta's consumer AI assistant, a chat surface embedded directly into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, plus a standalone web app at meta.ai and native iOS/Android apps. Powered by Llama 4/5 across most surfaces with Muse Spark (Meta Superintelligence Labs' new closed-weight model, launched April 8, 2026) backing the standalone app and rolling out to Family-of-Apps in mid-2026. 1B+ monthly active users across Meta's apps, the only consumer AI assistant with native distribution into ~4B existing users; the standalone Meta AI iPhone app has held a top-of-chart App Store position alongside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini since the Muse Spark launch.

Meta's consumer AI assistant embedded across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook + standalone meta.ai app. Proprietary; powered by Meta's Llama family (the underlying weights are use-restricted and scored separately at the model layer). Verified live June 2026.

underlying Llama weights are restricted (non-OSI) and model-layer scored elsewhere

Meta AI the assistant/UI is a closed proprietary consumer product; scored as closed counterpart. (Llama-the-model openness is a separate restricted-class score.)

Adoption

5 high confidence
5.0

Zuckerberg (May 2025 shareholder meeting, primary) stated Meta AI passed 1B monthly active users; reported growing to ~1.2B MAU by Q1 2026, ~63% of interactions on WhatsApp. Far above the >10M threshold. CAVEAT: a portion of these MAU reflect surfaced/embedded exposure inside WhatsApp/IG rather than deliberate assistant use (one analyst, Kantrowitz, argues engaged usage is far lower than OpenAI's). Attributed honestly to the embedded surface, not a standalone assistant count.

Capability

3 medium confidence
3.0

Broad-reach consumer assistant but narrow on the ui_api feature axes, one provider, consumer-only, limited enterprise/RAG/plugin depth. Not a category frontier-definer on capability.
